Sure, it sounds crazy:  a snowmobile and skier navigate a 1.75-mile downhill, then the sled tows the skiier up a 2.25-mile climb, and then they race back downhill another 1.75-miles.

Imagine doing that in 4 minutes and 4.8 seconds, and hitting a top speed of more than 80 miles per hour.  That’s what Ski-Doo driver Tyler Aklestad and skier Marco Sullivan did to win their second Arctic Man competition for in a row.

The Ski-Doo team of Jean-Guy AuCoin and Steve Girard won this year’s Cain’s Quest cross-country endurance race, making it the third year in a row riders on Ski-Doo snowmobiles have captured the top spot. In just its seventh year, Cain’s Quest has become one of the most coveted and hard-fought events in snowmobile racing and Ski-Doo riders and sleds have proven they are the ones to beat.

2012 Clean Snowmobile Challenge Winners Chose Ski-Doo

The Clarkson University Clean Snowmobile Chalenge Team

One of the more interesting snowmobile events of the season is the Clean Snowmobile Challenge, put on by the Society of Automotive Engineers.  It challenges college students to create snowmobiles that use less fuel and reduce emissions, beyond what is currently available.  The students’ innovations are always very eye-opening.

Clarkson University won its second straight Challenge using a Ski-Doo MX Z.  The second and third place teams in the internal combustion category, and the winner of the Zero Emissions category all used Ski-Doo sleds.
